FAQ

GSTIN questions

What is the format of a GSTIN?

A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, the 10-character PAN of the business, 1 character for the registration number of that PAN in the state (1–9, then A–Z), a 14th character that is “Z” for regular taxpayers, and a check digit.

What is the check digit?

The 15th character is worked out from the first 14 with a mod-36 formula published by GSTN. If one character is mistyped, the check digit almost never matches, so a wrong GSTIN can be caught before it goes on an invoice.

Does a valid format mean the GSTIN is active?

No. This tool checks the number itself. Whether it is registered, active or cancelled is shown by “Search Taxpayer” on the GST portal (gst.gov.in).

Why does a wrong GSTIN on an invoice matter?

Your B2B buyer claims input tax credit using the GSTIN on your invoice. A wrong number puts the sale under someone else (or no one) in GSTR-1, and the buyer cannot claim the credit until it is corrected.
