How GST is calculated

Adding GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100, and the total is price + GST. ₹2,500 at 5% is ₹125 GST, ₹2,625 in all.

Removing GST: taxable value = inclusive price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and GST is the difference. An MRP of ₹118 at 18% is ₹100 taxable and ₹18 GST.

CGST, SGST and IGST

A sale within one state (intra-state) carries two taxes of half the rate each: CGST for the Centre and SGST for the state (UTGST in a union territory without a legislature). A sale to another state (inter-state) carries IGST at the full rate. Which applies depends on the place of supply, usually where the goods are delivered.

On a tax invoice, every line shows its HSN or SAC code, rate, taxable value and tax, and the invoice totals each tax. Our free GST invoice generator lays this out for you.

FAQ

GST calculation questions

How do I calculate GST on a price?

Multiply the price before GST by the rate. For ₹1,000 at 18%: GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180, and the total is ₹1,180.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the taxable value. For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 taxable, so the GST in it is ₹180.

When do I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

When the place of supply is in the same state as the seller, charge CGST and SGST, each half the rate (9% + 9% for 18%). When it is in another state, charge IGST at the full rate.

What are the GST rates now?

From 22 September 2025 most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a small list of luxury and sin goods, plus special rates such as 0.25% and 3%. Some items stay at 12% or 28%. Check the rate for your HSN or SAC code with your CA.

Is GST charged on the MRP?

MRP already includes GST. To find the GST inside an MRP, use the “Remove GST” option: the calculator splits the MRP into the taxable value and the tax.
